I feel like I might know this legend... The one where the girl was offered to a serpent king and became his wife and then her sisters grew jealous of her treasures and killed the serpent king and she grieves and turns herself and her children into birds?

Yeah along those lines, in some versions her children turn into a chestnut, birch, oak and ash trees after being tricked into returning to the surface
